1. Mwari Mukuru
"(This piece) .. is created around a Shona song which presented me with a basic aesthetic problem - namely the danger of "idolizing" an art form that was different from my own. I wanted to achieve unity in two ways; firstly through a serial approach in which the song became the material of the piece as a whole.... Secondly, the song itself was to remain intact so that not only would the conflicting elements of the piece by their mutual juxtaposition, but the song itself would be an authentic representation of the original..." (Paul Renan)

2. Mbira Chorale "The Mbira Chorale from its name alone suggests a musical conception that simply arises from the use of a meeting of two distinct musical genres, different not only in period but also in conception. A European Chorale is fixed in time whilst the music of the mbira is cyclic.
"...My relationship to any exotic music is devoid of anthropological significance but based purely on the sound it makes. Many would call such synthesis of cultural perception post-modern, but unlike post-modern music, it does not defy necessary logic nor does it quote music from other traditions..." (Paul Renan)
